NAPPY NINA WEIGHT

Mexican Summer's Looking Glass series continues to satisfy our ears, with the release of Nappy Nina's 'Weight'. The independent NY label have been drip-feeding us gems from Pink Siifu and Shungu, Bedouine, Chris Cohen and more, adding to their ever-growing collection embodied by The Looking Glass Series compilation. The new release from Brooklyn-based emcee Nappy Nina is a cinematic, jazzy haven. Spine-tingling piano and legato strings that could easily be lifted from a Woody Allen film opens the song. The song gains a skippy rhythm from the complex drum pattern, whilst, in a humble tone, Nina rap roots in social commentary and philosophy, blended with poetic imagery, in lines like: 'disarm, or false alarm, but still some shit will go down depending on which god that you found.'. Nappy Nina's 'Weight' is a delight. -Ellie Rose-Davies
